Required prerequisite knowledge

The course is open to students in the MMP program specializing in film or media production. You must have a BA-degree in a relevant field. Extensive professional experience in the given field of specialization along with a relevant BA-degree may subsitute this requirement.

Course content

In this course, students will work in depth on the craft of developing and preparing a media project for production through the skillsets of a writer / creator / independent producer. Students use the course to prepare their practical master film projects or media productrions for production. The course is specifically aimed at students specializing in factual film, but students with other projects such as photography, animation, web documentary, or other types of media productions, may also apply.

Each student brings their own proposed project to the course to develop during the semester. The student must hand in a one page outline of their proposed master project during the first week of the course.

In accordance with the National Qualifications Framework the student will achieve the following learning outcomes after completing the course:

Learning outcome knowledge

The student will acquire advanced knowledge about 

  • narrative and storytelling
  • how to develop a media production in their field of specialization
  • budgeting, scheduling and financing for media production
Learning outcome skills

The student will acquire adevanced skills in  

  • creating and delivering pitches
  • developing, planning and preparing productions in their field of specialization
  • analysing and critically evaluating various sources of information to structure and formulate their decision making process and validate their choices
Learning outcome qualification

The student will gain competence in 

  • presenting and communicating project ideas verbally and in writing
  • developing media products and utilize appropriate terminology in correct contexts
  • producing and utilizing appropriate terminology in correct contexts
Working and learning activities

Students will work with different obligatory work requirements throughout the semester, details of which will be stated in the semester plan. Parts of the program can be implemented as e-learning modules and screen-based teaching and guidance.

The course will be taught in English if there are international students participating. Written work requirements may be written in Norwegian or English.

  • The student has participated in lectures and seminars
  • The has completed all assignments and work requirements
  • Fill out the evaluation form of the course (done anonymously)
Evaluation system

Examination results are executed in accordance with the Directive for Admission, Studies and Examination at Volda University College, § 9-4
