"Introduction to the contemporary welfare state" is an international study given in English for students from different universities outside of Norway as well as Norwegian students. The aim of the course is to provide the students with analytical competence with regard to knowledge of social structures and processes.  Kataryna Inez Dowczy (22) from Poland and Krisztina Fehèr (20) from Hungary are two of the Erasmus-students attending the course this semester.

– The course has been really good so far. I have studied journalism in Poland and wanted different aspects. I have traveled a lot in Europe and the Norwegian welfare system really is the best one. As a journalist it is positive to have insight about different cultures and societies. In Norway you have a lot of different minorities because of the welfare. I find that especially interesting, says Kataryna.

Warm learning atmosphere
The teaching methods include lectures, group work, seminars and written papers.

– We have a good connection with our teachers. The learning atmosphere here in Volda is a lot "warmer" then we are used to at home. I have a degree in special education. This course gives me a new perspective. This semester I also take Photo for Media and American Civilization. I wish there were some more courses given in English, says Kritztina.

Kataryna agrees. - Hopefully there will be courses for international journalismstudents. Volda has a good reputation and I would love to continue my studies here. I will start my master's next semester and will probably go to Copenhagen. They are the only ones in Scandinavia who offer the degree in English.

More courses in English

– We are happy to offer this course for the first time this semester. About 16 students are attending. We have had some good discussions in class already.  The Faculty find it important to continue and develop courses in English, says Alf Roger Djupvik.
